On 17th of September 2026, we had the opportunity to join Mount Kenya University for the send-off of the 6th cohort of young Kenyans preparing to travel to Germany to begin their Ausbildung.

For us, this moment represents more than the beginning of a journey to Germany. It also demonstrates the value of having a trusted local partner in Kenya and creating connections between future trainees and the Kenyan diaspora and professionals in Germany.
The value of a trusted local partner
A strong local partnership adds significant value to the preparation process. Through our collaboration with Mount Kenya University, participants have the opportunity to spend time within a university environment and make use of relevant facilities and infrastructure as they do their predeparture training in Kenya. For some participants, being on a university campus is a new experience. It provides an environment where they can learn, interact, build confidence and prepare for their next step. But the partnership is about much more than facilities.
Having a trusted institution on the ground also gives participants and their families a reliable point of reference throughout the preparation process. For many families, sending a young person to Germany is a major decision. Trust and access to reliable information are therefore an important part of preparing for the journey.
Connecting future trainees with past cohorts
Another important part of the journey is connecting new participants with people who have already made the transition. Previous cohorts who manage to travel to Kenya for holidays join incoming students to share their experiences. These are peoplle who have experienced the Ausbildung syste and have adapted to life in Germany. Their experience is an important resource for the next generation. Through mentorship and professional exchange, new participants can hear directly from people who have already taken the journey — including the opportunities, challenges and lessons they have experienced along the way. This creates a connection between those preparing to leave Kenya and the growing professional community of Kenyans in Germany.
The role of the Kenyan diaspora
The Kenyan diaspora in Germany has an important role to play in this process. The diaspora is not only a community of Kenyans living and working in Germany. It can also be a bridge between Kenya and Germany. Kenyan professionals can share knowledge, provide mentorship, answer practical questions and help future trainees better understand what to expect when they arrive.
We are grateful to Mount Kenya University for facilitating the send-off and for the strong partnership. We look forward to welcoming the 6th cohort to Germany in October and following their journey as they begin their Ausbildung.
