Navigating through the Education Systems in Germany | Einschulung

Starting primary school is one of the most significant milestones in a child’s life. In Germany, Einschulung — the official celebration of a child’s first day of school — is much more than simply attending the first lesson. It marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with learning, independence, friendships, and personal growth.

For many migrant families, navigating the German education system can feel unfamiliar. Questions about school readiness, enrollment processes, school culture, and how to support children through this transition are common. This session is designed to provide parents with practical guidance and cultural understanding as they prepare their children for Grade 1.

About Rachael

Rachael is a passionate Berlin-based primary school teacher, educator, and advocate for inclusive education. Having arrived in Germany as a student in the late 1990s, she brings both personal experience and professional expertise to conversations around education, integration, and belonging.

With academic backgrounds in Pharmacy and Biology, Rachael’s career has spanned research, education, and mentorship. Today, she works with children, families, and educators, while also supporting international teachers as they transition into the German education system. She has a particular passion for supporting multicultural communities and creating educational environments where children from diverse backgrounds feel seen, valued, and empowered.

Through her work, Rachael continues to advocate for educational equity and inclusion, helping families understand opportunities within the German education system while encouraging children to develop confidence, identity, and a strong sense of belonging. This session offers parents an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and connect with others who are beginning this important journey.
