1. Apprenticeship Programmes (Ausbildungen) in Germany

Apprenticeship programmes (Ausbildungen) are training programmes offered in Germany for school leavers who do not enroll for degree programmes.

Students enrolled for these programmes are employed in a company where they work partially and the rest of the time they have to attend schools. Depending on the type of the programme, students can either combine the work and train model weekly or blocked in months. The programme takes 3 years and students are paid a small salary. For one to enroll for the programmes, a host company/training institution is a requirement plus very good German language.

Apprenticeship Programmes to train as a nurse in Germany

In 2022, AG-Career Hub facilitated a partnership between Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences based in Germany and Mount Kenya University based in Kenya to facilitate win-win collaborations between Germany and Kenya. In year 2023, the first pilot project was launched offering young people an opportunity to train as nurses in Germany. Before starting the trainings in Germany, the candidates who successfully meet the requirements (see below) are enrolled for a preparation course at Mount Kenya University in Kenya to prepare them for the trainings in Germany.

Scaling barriers to sourcing trainees in East Africa

The preparation course which takes 14 weeks is part of the research project (Scaling barriers to sourcing trainees in East Africa) that focuses on preparing people in their home country to join apprenticeship to train as a nurse in Germany. The aim of this research project is to investigate, what kind of structures and processes would have to be established in order to annually prepare young people in East Africa for an apprenticeship as a nurse in Germany. In particular, we address the questions on how to select, and how to prepare the participants in terms of language and intercultural skills as well basic nursing skills so that the participants of the programme will not only successfully complete their training in Germany but also feel at home in Germany – both professionally as well as personally.
