Apprenticeship Programmes to train as a nurse in Germany

In 2022, AG-Career Hub facilitated a partnership between Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences based in Germany and Mount Kenya University based in Kenya to facilitate win-win collaborations between Germany and Kenya. In year 2023, the first pilot project was launched offering young people an opportunity to train as nurses in Germany. Before starting the trainings in Germany, the candidates who successfully meet the requirements (see below) are enrolled for a preparation course at Mount Kenya University in Kenya to prepare them for the trainings in Germany.


Candidate Selection & Requirements

Applicants will undergo a two-step aptitude test conducted online by our project partner, arbquest Befragungssysteme (www.arbquest.com), based in Germany. Selection will be based on performance in these assessments. To qualify for the aptitude test, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

Candidates interested to enroll for the programme must have the following qualifications:

  • Proficiency in German Language at level B2 language certificate
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum of C (Plain). If an applicant holds a B2-level proficiency in German, lower KCSE grades may be considered.
  • If you have other high school certificates, kindly contact us.
  • Age limit: 29 years
  • Passionate to work in the healthcare sector

Preparation Certificate Course

Candidates who will meet the above requirements will be enrolled for the Preparatory Certificate Course at Mount Kenya University in Thika which will take 14 weeks. The short course covers intercultural training for working and living in Germany, German Language Medical Terminology Course and and basic nursing skills. The goal of the preparation course is to help the students improve their language skills, gain a better understanding of the German culture, understand the competencies needed to blend into the new culture and most importantly understand the structures of the healthcare systems in Germany.


Apprenticeship at German partner hospitals

Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences as Project leader will facilitate processing of visa and job contracts with the partner hospitals in Germany. For the training in Germany, students are not charged any tuition fee but are entitled to get a working contract for the training with a monthly salary to cater for the basic needs and accommodation. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, students are provided with excellent career opportunities for full-time employment in German hospitals exposing them to extensive further specialised training opportunities among other benefits.


Onboarding in Germany

During the preparation in Kenya and training in Germany, the programme partner AG-Career Hub in collaboration with Kenyan nurses who trained in Germany will support the students to successfully integrate into the training and working environment in German hospitals as well as facilitate career coaching and mentorship in Germany to accompany them during their stay.
