The first cohort of our SSTEA research project in collaboration with University of Applied Sciences Koblenz, Mount Kenya University - MKU and AG-Career Hub arrived on 3rd of April 2024 in Germany.

The students have already started with their nursing apprenticeship training programmes in Caritas-Krankenhaus Bad Mergentheim. Click here for more insights. First MKU_Koblenz Cohort in Germany

The students who already possess good German language skills were enrolled for a preparation course at Mount Kenya University in Thika where they had an opportunity to improve their language skills, get basic nursing skills and got an induction of the German culture through intensive intercultural training courses that were offered during that time.

This marks a significant step forward in healthcare and international collaboration. Mount Kenya University is proud to continue fostering such impactful initiatives. AG Career Hub, the network of Kenyan professionals based in Germany, will provide ongoing mentorship, career guidance, and support for their integration in Germany.

What are the objectives of this research project?

Instead of sourcing qualified nurses internationally, another approach is to prepare people in their home country as to successfully participate in an apprenticeship to become a qualified nurse in Germany. The aim of this project is to investigate, what kind of structures and processes would have to be established in order to annually prepare 5.000 young people in East Africa for an apprenticeship as a nurse in Germany. In particular, we address the questions on how to select, and how to prepare the participants in terms of language and intercultural skills as well basic nursing skills so that the participants of the programme will not only successfully complete their training in Germany but also feel at home in Germany – both professionally as well as personally.
