1. Apprenticeship Programmes (Ausbildungen) in Germany
Apprenticeship programmes (Ausbildungen) are training programmes offered in Germany for school leavers who do not enroll for degree programmes.
Students enrolled in apprenticeship programs are employed by a company where they work part-time while also attending school. Depending on the program type, students can either alternate between work and training on a weekly basis or in monthly blocks. The program lasts for three years, during which students receive a monthly salary for upkeep. To enroll for the trainings, a host company or training institution is required, along with a strong proficiency in German.
Scaling barriers to sourcing trainees in East Africa
In 2022, AG-Career Hub established a partnership between Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Germany and Mount Kenya University in Kenya to foster mutually beneficial collaborations between the two countries. In 2023, the first pilot project was launched, providing young people with the opportunity to train as nurses in Germany. Candidates who meet the specified requirements (listed below) are first enrolled in a preparatory course at Mount Kenya University in Kenya to get ready for the training in Germany. The first cohort arrived in Germany in April 2024 and has begun their training there. The students are currently undergoing training at Caritas in Bad Mergentheim.

Which requirements do the students need to be enrolled for the nursing apprenticeship trainings in Germany?
Requirements for apprenticeship programmes in Germany
- German language level of B2
- High School Certificate with a Minimum Grade of C (KCSE). If an applicant holds a B2-level proficiency in German, lower KCSE grades may be considered.

- Age limit: 29 years
- Passionate to train as a nurse

What happens after enrollment for the preparation course at MKU?
Students who meet the requirements will be enrolled for the preparation course at MKU. The short course covers intercultural training for working and living in Germany, German Language Medical Terminology Course and and basic nursing skills. The goal of the preparation course is to help the students improve their language skills, gain a better understanding of the German culture, understand the competencies needed to blend into the new culture and most importantly understand the structures of the healthcare systems in Germany.
During this time, the documents for visa applications will be processed for accreditation in Germany. The partners in Germany will support the students in processing visa documents, arranging for visa interviews, airport pickup and further support during their training in Germany.
