Background: Academic Relationships between Africa and Europe

The academic relationship between Africa and Europe has brought in great opportunities for students, young scientists and professionals to pursue their career through scholarship grants, exchange programmes, collaborations between universities and through self-sponsorship. Every year thousands of students have the opportunity to pursue their studies abroad, work or participate in exchange programmes.

Labour market Crisis in Germany

Germany, Europe’s biggest economy, is facing labour crisis in several sectors. Companies across many sectors have been struggling to fill in positions. According to “Make it in Germany”; the central and official portal for skilled professionals from abroad, top professions affected are in the healthcare sector, sciences and engineering. Due to these factors, many companies are forced to hire foreign workers from abroad to fill in the gaps.

Opportunities in Germany and Austria

Mount Kenya University has kicked off with various programmes to prepare people for opportunities in Germany and Austria. The recent partnership between Mount Kenya University and Hochschule Koblenz is preparing students interested in pursuing nursing apprenticeship programmes for German Hospitals. Mount Kenya University also signed a partnership with lebenshilfe in Tirol offering graduates with Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) opportunities to work in Austria.

Role of the Diaspora Communities

The diaspora communities based in these countries have been keen on establishing academic and business collaborations between their countries of residence and of origin, with the goal of initiating win-win collaborations. The communities are keen on ensuring that proper recruitment and on-boarding programmes are implemented to focus on hire retention and productivity. AG-Career Hub together with diaspora initiatives in Germany are actively involved in offering the information, pre-boarding, onboarding, intercultural trainings and legal support to both companies, organisations and to the people looking for these opportunities.
